Body image anxiety are few things new. For hundreds of years for women who live been bombarded with pictures of fashionable bodies and ways to achieve them. Victorian women valued a small waist and a curvaceous bottom; whereas being skinny with legs on show, epitomised the Sixties. Today we have considerable choice and freedom of expression. It is rarely been easier to find fashion that suits our colouring, size and shape. Yet more than ever women are anxious about the way they look.

Just how can we learn to accept, otherwise love, our body?

Research by Professor Nichola Rumsey, (University from the West of England) demonstrates children as young as five can present understanding of body image judgments. By seven they’re beginning to show body dissatisfaction and by adulthood, 90% of British women have body image anxiety. This is apparently a lifelong issue as many women in their 80’s are still concerned about the way their bodies look.

Experts always debate the factors which may have led us to possess this focus on looks. Meanwhile the effects of body image anxiety on women, with regards to stress, eating disorders and even depression, increases. So inside a world where many models and celebrities are a size zero how do you stay body positive?

1. Get new heroines that you can actually imitate. Choose them for reasons apart from appearance such as their work ethic, generosity or determination.

2. Avoid fashion magazines which contain unrealistic versions of the items celebrities and models actually appear to be.

3. Avoid negative self-talk about your body. Start focusing around the parts you do like.

4. Purchase as your best friend. Would you call your best friend names such as ‘fat’ or ‘wrinkly’ so don’t do it to yourself.

5. Don’t compare yourself to others. You’ll often be putting someone down, either yourself or another person. Both have a bad effect on your self-esteem.

6. Eat balanced meals, get moderate exercise and stay outside more.

7. Throw away the scales. They’re just a number and not a measure of your self-worth. If you want to measure something, measure your generosity, quantity of friends, education or determination.

8. List the things you like about your appearance. You may find this tricky in the beginning, but with practice, whenever you look in the mirror you’ll only begin to see the positives.

9. Once you receive a compliment respond using a sincere ‘Thank You’ then take it to heart and accept is as true.

10. Stop trying to accomplish your perfect body. It’s an unattainable goal which will only make you feel just like a disappointment or a failure. If you wish to lose weight set your hair a realistic goal it is possible to maintain.

11. Realize that you’re not alone in feeling by doing this. Many other women are struggling to be happy with the way they look. Yet it’s a goal you can achieve.

12. Remember you are an exceptional and beautiful individual and then any ‘flaws’ you have are really just reasons why you are unique.
